If you are an inbound freshman that fidgets about starting this brand-new chapter in your life, you have come to the right place. If you are anything like me you started thinking of packaging weeks (if not months) back, however you still do not feel prepared. Take a second to examine my packing list to help save you a long time and energy prior to proceeding to these college packing tips. In fact packing for college is even more demanding than choosing what to take.
I have moved 3 times in the last 2 years. 2 of those trips were cross-country relocations. Needless to state, I have actually become a packaging and moving professional. Today I am going to share a few tips and techniques that I have gotten along the method to make moving for college as pain-free as possible. These college packing tips are ideal for the college student that is moving long distance, but they will help everybody!
College Packing Tips
Packing for college is not a simple feat. In fact, I was sooo stressed out and jam-packed and repacked several times. On top of that, I overpacked and didn't even wear half of what I brought. Ideally these college packing tips conserve you from having an experience like I did.
Make A List
This may appear apparent, but making a list is an excellent location to start. Fortunate for you, I've done the effort for you. Head over to my college packaging list and get the variation to referral. As soon as you understand exactly what you require to get and what you already have, the process will be a lot simpler! I also discovered it much easier to make a list of particular clothes I was going to take to prevent overpacking (tbh I still overpacked so learn from my mistakes).
Cram In Duffle Bags & Suitcases
I think this one really depends on how far out-of-state you are going. I moved from California to Tennessee. Given that this has to do with a 2,000 mile journey, we flew. Packing in duffle bags is a fantastic option due to the fact that they condense way easier and take up much less area. However, you can pack more in travel suitcases and not have to fret about how heavy the bags get. It's absolutely a personal preference what path you choose to go. Even if you aren't flying to school, I recommend you cram in a minimum of one duffle bag or luggage so you have it for any journeys you take throughout the academic year (going home or spring break).
Arrange Your Bags/Boxes By Classification
Try to keep your bags as arranged as possible. This will assist you on Move-In Day when you start unloading. Start by laying everything out in your room. Make stacks of clothes, bedding, design, ect. Once you have your stacks sorted you can start fitting whatever into your bags or boxes. In all honesty, this will be the most uphill struggle. You will likely have WAYYYY more clothes than bedding or design. A suggestion is to fit your clothing around the other things you have loaded. If you are taking photo frames, wrap a sweatshirt around it to keep it from breaking (do this with anything breakable).
Something I want I would have done is compose a list of whatever that was in each bag and slide it on the top once it was totally packed. Given that I packed and repacked multiple times to get whatever to fit, I lost track of what bag contained what, which made unloading a MAJOR headache.
Usage Vacuum Sealed Bags
YALL !!!! This was a life saver for me. Because I was moving so far, I knew I wouldn't be going home in time for the weather condition changes. I had to bring my Summer/Fall clothes in addition to some Winter clothing. Because coats and sweatshirts use up a lot of area, get some of these ziplock vacuum bags to pack at the bottom of your suitcases. I also used these for pillows that I was taking with me.
If You Don't Use It, Don't Take It
In some cases we get these concepts in our head that we are going to transform ourselves in college. It is a new chapter of our lives after all right? Well let me inform ya, old routines die hard. If you use lounge clothing bulk of the time, you most likely still will. You might dress great for the very first couple of weeks of classes but that will end rapidly and you will resort back to your old methods. All of us do Try to restrict yourself on the products you "may" usage when you get to college.
College Moving Hacks
Once you have actually finished packing, you are prepared to make the relocation. The move has most likely been prepared for a while at this point and odds are you have actually whatever set in stone.
If You Are Flying
I highly advise flying with Southwest Airlines. This isn't sponsored by them I simply really think they are the very best airline out there and offer a few of the best service. Southwest allows each person to check in 2 bags for FREE! They are likewise constantly having sales to major cities too.
Buy Things Online
This is the best of my college packing suggestions and a moving hack. Buying all of the larger items you require for school is terrific for lots of factors. To start with, it conserves you from needing to pack them. You never recognize how much area your bedding uses up till you are down an entire travel suitcase. It likewise saves you A LOT of time! After having traveled to school and handling the madness that is move in day, you're not going to wish to wander around busy shops looking through selected over items. If you buy all of the things you require you can easily run to the shop and select them up. It's ensured to be there! PLUS Target is taking 15% off all orders for college goods that are made for pick up in your college town! You could even take it an action even more and contact your school's mail space and see if you can have things provided there. This is ideal for much smaller sized schools, however it deserves a try! I did this with ALL of my bedding and some additional stuff and it existed waiting for me on move in day which made moving SOOOOO much easier!
Things to purchase online: bedding, toiletries (shampoo, conditioner, body wash, ect.), trash bin, complete body mirror, school products, and any other large scale items.
Take An Overnight Bag
After a long day of moving the last thing you will want to do is search the mess for the requirements. If you are flying, this can be your carry-on. Take a backpack with one or two attires, pjs, shower shoes, any medication you take, and anything else you would take on an over night trip. If you are remaining at a hotel the day before you could keep the travel toiletries just in case you require them.
I would like to hear some of your best college packing ideas and moving hacks! If you are an out of state student, what saved your life? If you moved a much shorter distance, what did you do differently? Let me know in the remarks listed below!
